How to Prevent Unwanted Kitchen Pests
A fun day of baking can quickly turn into a nightmare if you discover your kitchen is infested with pests. Cockroaches, rodents, and other critters are known to take up residence in homes as they search for food -- and your kitchen is the best resource for them.
Sometimes pests can sneak into your home without you realizing it, so it’s important that you take steps to prevent this from happening. Luckily, experts at the National Pest Management Association have some tips to help you out!
Tips for Preventing Pests in the Kitchen
First take a look at your kitchen and every little corner of the space. Do you have a window that doesn’t close all the way? Or a door with holes in its screen? Are there cracks or open spaces along the floors, walls, or molding? These little imperfections could end up causing an infestation. Pests will take full advance of any weak spot in your home making it crucial to be prepared!
Once you notice the areas that could be allowing pests entry to your home, create a plan of attack. Below are some helpful tips on how to prevent pests in the kitchen:
- Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home including entry points for utilities and pipes.
- Keep your counters free of food debris and avoid leaving dishes in the sink for too long.
- Store garbage in sealed containers and dispose of it regularly.
- Invest in sealable, airtight containers that will protect your food from pests.
- Do not leave pet food sitting out – pests will eat this too!
Replace worn down weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around foundation and windows.
If you discover unwanted kitchen pests, it is best to work with a pest control professional who can help. Some pests, such as rodents and cockroaches, pose a serious threat to your family’s health and should be removed as soon as possible.
