Rockin’ Around the Pest-Free Christmas Tree
The National Pest Management Association offers advice for keeping pests out while decorating for the holidays
FAIRFAX, VA (December 9, 2019) – It’s a debate that runs deep in many households during the holidays: whether to buy a real, fresh-cut tree, or go the artificial route. While fresh evergreens may be the standard, there are a few things to consider before bringing one into your home. According to SaferBrand, 33 million real trees are sold across the U.S. each year, and there could be up to 25,000 bugs in just one tree! To help protect your home from holiday hitchhikers, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) is reminding homeowners to be vigilant about keeping pests out while decorating the tree this year.
“There’s always a risk of bringing in pests whenever you introduce live greenery into the home, and Christmas trees are no exception,” said Cindy Mannes, vice president of public affairs for NPMA. “Spiders, rodents, ants and occasional invaders will often nest in trees, wreathes and garlands, so it’s important that homeowners thoroughly inspect these items and clear them of any concerning debris before bringing them inside.”
By taking a few simple preventative measures, homeowners can ensure their homes stay pest-free and jolly this holiday season. To keep pesky intruders out, NPMA offers the following tips:
- Carefully inspect live, fresh cut trees, wreathes and garlands for spiders, insect nests or eggs before purchasing
- Shake greenery outdoors to remove any pests before bringing them inside
- Unpack ornaments and decorations outdoors so that any pests hiding inside aren’t released into the home
- When it’s time to take down the tree, do not place it near your home, as this can attract mice, termites and other pests
If you suspect an infestation this holiday season, be sure to contact a licensed pest control professional for a home inspection to ensure your holiday season is a pest-free one.
