Protect Your Pantry: Tips for a Pest-Free Holiday Season

The National Pest Management Association Educates Homeowners on Preventing Pests from Ruining Holiday Meals

FAIRFAX, Va. (November 25, 2024) – The holidays are just around the corner, and consumers across the country are stocking up on ingredients in preparation to host their family and friends. To help protect homes from uninvited guests, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) is sharing key prevention tips for homeowners to keep common pantry pests out of their homes and holiday gatherings.

“Stored food can attract unwanted visitors like rodents and pantry pests that can spread germs and infest food,” said Dr. Jim Fredericks, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for NPMA. “Proactive preparation keeps your pantry safe and your holiday ingredients fresh, ensuring the only ones enjoying the meal this season are your family and friends!”

To ensure rodents and pantry pests can’t spoil your holiday meals, NPMA recommends these steps to prevent infestations:

  • Seal Entry Points: Inspect the home for gaps around doors, windows, pipes, and vents, and seal them with steel wool or caulk.
  • Package Food Properly: Store pantry staples like flour, cereal, and grains in airtight containers.
  • Store Food Off the Floor: Keep food items on shelves at least six inches off the floor to make it harder for rodents to access.
  • Inspect Food Items: Before purchasing or storing ingredients, check for signs of damage or pests, such as holes in packaging, webbing, or small insects inside.
  • Keep a Clean Pantry: Wipe down pantry shelves and vacuum corners regularly to remove spills, crumbs, and food debris that attract pests.

If you suspect an infestation, it is best to contact a pest control professional. For more information on protecting your home from pantry invaders, visit www.PestWorld.org.
